Today my wife & I decided to walk down new market lanes and head for the big shopping malls of Kuta. Before we left I decided to copy a list of prices we should expect to pay for items because we made the mistake of paying way too much for a tshirt after not familiarising ourselves with the currency. It cost 22,000 RP but spent 220,000 RP by accident. Ouch!
Today though, we walked for what seemed like miles (turned out to be about a Kilometre) before ducking into a Circle K to grab an ice cream and new bottles of water after running out quite quickly in the Balinese heat. Rehydrated, we stumbled out onto Jalan Legian and continued our way by foot to Lippo Plaza on Sunset Road in Kuta, before the heat started taking it's toll.
Hot & flustered we were approached by a man on a scooter at an intersection who wanted to sell (scam) something timeshare related and tried to hand us cards which we politely declined. He proceed to tear it open and tell us we had magically won 2 "free" tshirts but we ignored him and kept on going. We were glad that we were warned about that kind of thing before we left. A little unsure of where we were, we found a tour agent vendor who told us where it was and that we should back track to the previous intersection and take a Taxi.
Seeing that timeshare guy wanting our attention again, we quickly jumped in the taksi (taxi). Without thinking (and we were warned against doing so) we agreed on a price of 100,000 RP and headed for Lippo Plaza. Once we got to the Plaza we got out of the taksi and stepped inside the nice cool air conditioned shopping centre. We looked around and my wife said it was much smaller than she thought. In truth it was tiny and had very little to offer. After a quick Google search using the free wifi, it turned out we muddled up our shopping centres and were at the wrong place. Where we actually wanted to go was Lippo Mall. but we sat down and enjoyed a coffee anyway.
After our refreshment we headed outside, we hailed another taksi and immediately asked for the meter to be on (having learnt our lesson) and headed for Lippo Mall. We traveled much further but only spent less than 30,000 RP this time round. We also pulled off the bluff of having been here before much more convincingly this time too!
Bubba Gump Shrimp. A Forrest Gump themed restaurant in Kuta, Bali Indonesia.
We then returned outside, chatted to some locals and walked along the road searching for interesting things. We then came across Jalan Kartika Plasa, another big retail shopping mall and browsed around there too.
We took the back exit and walked out onto a Kuta Beach with old fishing Junkers anchored off the shoreline behind the breakers. We stopped and took some photos and take in a bit of the sunset before heading back for the main road. We decided to take a taksi back to our hotel as we were well and truly exhausted by this point. Along the way we passed by the waterpark and Bubba Gump Shrimp, a Forrest Gump themed restaurant that we have since been told is really good. Our taksi driver Ervan was great, he gave us a few pointers as to good tour operators who are much cheaper than Buffilo Tours, who can take us to Ubud in a couple of days time.
After we got back to the hotel, my wife & I went across the street to the mart and got some snacks and more water bottles. I swear, I've never drank so much water before in my life! The heat and humidity really takes it out of you here. We also realised alcohol is far cheaper there than in our hotel and made a mental note of it for later. We pigged out a little on a bag of French Fries style potato chips with chilli dipping sauce and headed downstairs to the swimming pool to lounge out and take a dip.
I had a vision of a shot I wanted to take since we got here of our hotel but decided to leave my DSLR in our room as it was a little cloudy. After a while though I started regretting it, as the full moon broke out from behind the clouds and rose up over the ornate entrance to our hotel. I swam over to the ledge and asked my wife if she could return to our room and get it for me. A few minutes later she returned with my camera gear and I set my camer up on my travel tripod and waded over to the swim up bar in the middle of the pool. I set the tripod up on the counter and shot the stunning moon rise. Now I just wish I had brought my laptop with us, so I could share it with everyone! For now though I'll have to keep you updated with shots from my iPhone
